You might be excited to finally get rid of them and stop any issues they have been causing. However, you might be a bit nervous about the procedure itself. Your dentist will make it as comfortable as possible, but they will also set you up for smooth healing afterward. You might wonder how long it will take until you’re back to normal, so here’s a typical recovery timeline to know.

Right After Your Treatment

Once your wisdom teeth are taken out, you are likely not to feel very much. Your mouth was numbed with powerful local anesthesia, and you were likely given dental sedation to help you be more at ease. Instead, you might feel a bit groggy and have to gently bite down on gauze.

As you get home, you should follow your dentist’s post-op instructions and simply take it easy. Get plenty of rest, keep your head elevated, and avoid hot and spicy foods to keep your mouth comfortable. Your body will start to heal by forming a blood clot in the empty socket.

A Couple of Days Afterward

You may have swelling, and it often reaches its peak on days two and three. By applying a cold pack to your cheek for 15-minute intervals, you can soothe it. Continue with a soft, gentle diet to avoid irritation. Have stuff like mashed potatoes, yogurt, or applesauce, as they are easy to chew and give your mouth a break.

Make sure you don’t drink from a straw or rinse too aggressively, since these can dislodge the needed blood clot and lead to dry socket. Don’t forget to keep following your provider’s guidelines as well!

Through the First Week

Any discomfort or swelling you have should start to go away at the end of the first week. You may be good to get back to light activities, but it doesn’t hurt to continue getting plenty of rest and taking it easy.

It’s best if you still avoid crunchy or spicy things, as they can hurt the healing extraction site. You may have a more comfortable time brushing and flossing, but still be gentle when doing them. Rinsing with warm salt water can also soothe inflammation and help you get rid of harmful bacteria and debris.

In the Two to Four Weeks Following

Many people feel back to normal two weeks after their procedure, but it’s possible you will still have minor tenderness. The pain itself should be over, but your gums will still need to heal, which can take about a month. Your jawbone tissue will also need to be repaired, and that happens over the next several! Thankfully, you should feel better in no time and get back the confident, worry-free smile you deserve.

About the Practice

At Wethersfield Dental Group, our team is proud to serve the local community with compassionate, comprehensive dental care.
